The Kaiju's Favorite 2024 Books
It’s the day after Christmas, and I just realized that I forgot to submit an article. *looks at pile of half finished movie novelizations, D&D books, and reviews* Um… *panic and flail* I’m going to share with you… *steal Jordan’s listicle* Kaiju’s Top 5 Reads of 2024!
Before we jump into my top five, I have just a few notes. Since the Gnome got his list out first, I’ve decided to not have any repeats from his list here. If it’s on his list, then I’m not going to put it on mine (I’m petty like that). I’ve also decided not to put any repeat reads here, or it would only be Discworld novels.
So, here we go! My “Top 5 Reads of 2024!”
5. Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky
What if Wall-E was written by Douglas Adams? That’s the best way I can explain this pleasant dystopian novel. We follow an android butler who struggles to find new employment after a mysterious murder! Too bad the world is falling apart and no one seems to be able or willing to fix it. There’s a glimmer of hope in this broken world, but it’s a long journey to find it.
4. The Daughters’ War by Christopher Buehlman
Take one part Apocalypse Now, two parts Lord of the Rings, and a giant murder birb. Throw them in a blender, and this is what you’d get. It was weird, brutal, and beautiful.
3. The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
It’s really hard to explain how much I loved this book. So instead, let me link you to my review and let past Book Kaiju do all the work.
2. Dragonfired by J. Zachary Pike
This book is about defeating the greatest villain ever: Capitalism. And since the heroes actually stand a chance of succeeding you know it’s fantasy. I felt I actually learned how our financial system works by reading these books. I also learned we need to burn it all down.
1. Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson
I honestly was afraid that I was overhyped for this book. There’s just been so much build up for the conclusion of the first arc of The Stormlight Archives. I’ve been on message boards. I’ve created crackpot theories involving crabs. I even went to a freaking convention for this book. My hype level was astronomical.
And you know what? I wasn’t hyped enough.
I laughed, I cried, I yelled. I want to read it again. Keep an eye out for my full review coming soon!
